Frequently asked questions

How does the app decide my level? Take the placement test (25 questions, about 10 minutes). It adapts to you: right answers lead to harder questions, wrong answers to easier ones. Your level only goes up: a weaker result never lowers it.

When can I take the test again? 48 hours after you started your last attempt. An attempt counts as soon as it starts, even if you leave early. You can also watch 3 short ads to retake it sooner, at most once every 24 hours.

Do I need an account? No, you can learn as a guest. Sign in with Apple or Google (during setup or later in Settings → Account) to keep your level and progress when you change phones. Your guest progress is kept when you sign in. Speaking rooms need a signed-in account.

Who can join the speaking rooms? Learners from level A2, aged 18 or older, with a signed-in account. In 1:1 quick match you talk for 10 minutes with one learner at your level, with a topic to talk about; you can add 5 minutes when you both agree. In group rooms up to 8 people speak and others listen; anyone can open a room and host it. At room hours rooms open for every level, and you can get a reminder.

What are coins? A 1:1 call or joining or opening a group room costs 1 coin. You get 5 free coins to start, and you can watch a short video to get 1 more coin (up to 5 videos a day). Tap the coins at the top of Speaking rooms to see your balance.

Someone broke the rules in a call. What can I do? Tap Report during or after the call (or on the person in a group room). Reporting also blocks them: you won't be matched again. We review every report. You can also just Block someone.

Are calls recorded? No. Calls are live only and are never recorded or stored.

How do the cards work? German Mate uses spaced repetition (FSRS): after each card, choose Again, Hard, Good or Easy. The app shows the card again just before you would forget it. New words are added each day according to your daily goal.

How do I change the app language or my daily goal? Home → ⚙︎ Settings.

How do I start over? Settings → Reset progress deletes your cards, reviews and XP on this iPhone. Your level stays.

How do I delete my account? Settings → Account → Delete account. Your account and everything linked to it are deleted from our server right away (backups within 14 days), and Sign in with Apple is disconnected.

Is the course reviewed by teachers? The words and examples were written carefully for level A1 and are reviewed by a qualified German teacher. If you find a mistake, please tell us at support@mansouralhaddad.com.
